Planetary Impact
If you are new to astrology, then you need to know that Transits are nothing to do with White Van Man (hopefully!) and everything to do with the positions of planets, Sun and Moon moving over the degrees of zodiacal longitude occupied by bodies in the Solar System at the moment of your birth. These contacts will coincide with events in your life, and your responses to these events, connected with the symbolism of the planet or luminary concerned.
Because they travel through the zodiac fairly quickly, the Sun, Moon and inner planets (Mercury and Venus) will only have transient effects on your life unless the latter are moving slowly from direct to retrograde (from Earth's viewpoint) or vice versa either side of a 'station' when they appear to stand still for a short while. To a certain extent this is also true of Mars on its two-year journey around the Sun - but even the briefest visits of Mars to one's horoscope can be really exciting or painfully disruptive. Ceres will be worth watching now that she has the official stamp of astronomical approval as a dwarf planet in common with her challenging and distant son-in-law Pluto. Jupiter tends to bring opportunity and often great joy, unless he is hauling you through the law-courts; Saturn reminds us often frustratingly of our human limitations; Chiron takes us on a learning curve that can be pretty steep unless we are doing the teaching; Uranus - well, don't even try to second-guess what he will spring on you! ... and Neptune can take you so far out of yourself and normal life that you can get lost.
But Pluto - ah! Pluto. He's the fellow to watch. Unless you have got A's in your life-exams he will test you and test you. He's in Capricorn at the moment, testing most of the so-called civilised world - political, financial, environmental. The 'birth chart' of every year has Sun in Capricorn, and scores of official institutions have been kicked off on the same day, January 1st. This includes the UK. We are all 'under the cosh'. All too soon it will be America's turn.
I'm sorry, dear astronomers; Pluto may be physically small - but he is no dwarf! You ignore him at your peril. If you get his searching questions wrong there's the devil to pay.
"The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars, but in ourselves."
Another important transit is the Moon's nodal axis, where the Moon's orbit crosses that of the Earth around the Sun. At the two ends of this axis (the 'dragon's head' and the 'dragon's tail') the annual solar and lunar eclipses fall. If one of these hits your chart, again things tend to happen to provoke spiritual growth - and it's not always comfortable. At all times your own will determines whether you make the best or worst of what the heavens throw at you.
In the west, there is a tendency to concentrate on the Tropical zodiac that starts, with 0 Aries, at the point of the Spring Equinox. Transits along with everything else are measured from there. But (as you will see elsewhere in these pages) there are sidereal transits too - measured from the start of the constellation Aries. And draconic transits, where 0 Aries is found at the 'dragon's head' and the planetary movements are measured from that nodal point. All these have their say in how your life unfolds, and the options you have in responding to events. You can read about the different zodiacs on the InterDimensional Nativity page.
Under what astrologers term 'heavy transits', sometimes people die. But then, I have seen people die when Jupiter was smiling on them. We depart this world for the next when it's time, and for all kinds of different reasons. Ignore the astrologer who says, 'I see death in this chart. ' It's far more likely to be another demanding exam! Do your best to honour the transits by answering life's questions the best you can, be a decent and considerate human being, don't assume you have all the answers, and you won't go too far wrong.
